THE FACES AT YOUR SHOULDER ~ REVIEW
Sunday, 6 August 2023
BLOOD WOOD REVIEW
Blood Wood sold out very very quickly
but copies are probably still available from some of the dealers who stock
Sarob Press titles.
In the UK try coldtonnage.com or fantasticliterature.com
In the USA there is camelotbooks.com / darkhollowbooks@metrocast.net /
greenhandbookshop.com / ofilip@nstar.net
and ziesings.com
The forthcoming Possessions and
Pursuits a shared volume by John Howard / Mark Valentine is already (with a
few weeks still to publication) looking like it, too, might sell out very
quickly. Let me know if you want this one and haven’t yet ordered or reserved
your copy … full details in the post below.
Cheers, Robert.

NEW TITLE NEWS: POSSESSIONS AND PURSUITS
In this third (and final) shared volume influenced by the supernatural and metaphysical thrillers of “Inkling” Charles Williams (1886-1945), John Howard presents a wonder-filled short novel and Mark Valentine serves up two rather amazing novelettes.
John Howard’s fast-paced novel ‘Fallen Sun’ recounts the battle between several rival groups for ownership of a powerful Byzantine talisman, and the different visions they each encounter when it is in their possession. Through many twists and turns of chance and intention, none of the characters emerge unchanged, until the full significance of the treasure is at last revealed.
Mark Valentine’s ‘Masque and Anti-Masque’ is set in a small, ancient university town with a tradition of seasonal processions. But what is their significance? Could the town really be the occult capital of England, as a new book proposes? And in ‘The Prospero Machine’, the cards issued by fortune-telling machines at a seaside resort seem to have an uncanny influence on the town, linked to an obscure society’s work with dream magic.

NEW TITLE NEWS: BLOOD WOOD AND OTHER STORIES
Christopher Harman is a former librarian and lives in Preston, Lancashire. His stories have appeared in magazines and anthologies over almost thirty years and this (sort of/mostly) retrospective and bumper collection of his work is really long overdue.
Presenting an invitation to terror … here the
reader will discover a dozen tales of Jamesian
chills, creeping urban dread and rural folk horror … there is darkness even in
the common-place. And for Mr Harman’s characters there appears to be no escape
from the lurking horrors …
Eleven of these stories were originally
published (in magazines and anthologies)
over a period of twenty years between 1994 and 2014 and are collected together
here for the first time. The title novella “Blood Wood” was written especially
and is wholly original to this volume.
Stories: “The Children”, “Passengers”, “A Better Place”, “In the Fields”, “Dinckley Green”, “Sleepers”, “By Leaf and Thorn”, “The Last to be Found”, “Jackdaw Jack”, “Dark Tracks”, “Hill Shadows” and “Blood Wood”
