RON WEIGHELL R.I.P.

Very saddened to hear that Ron Weighell has passed away.

A friend, a lovely man and a brilliant and wonderful writer who will be much missed.

I am extremely proud to have published his story collections “Summonings” and the revised “The White Road”, and three novellas for the shared volumes (with John Howard and Mark Valentine) “Romances of the White Day”, “Pagan Triptych” and “From Ancient Ravens”.

My truly heartfelt and sincere condolences to his wife Fran and to all his family and friends.

R.I.P. Ron.

Keep safe and well everyone, Robert.

NEW TITLE NEWS: ILL MET BY DARKNESS

NEW TITLE NEWS

ILL MET BY DARKNESS by PAUL FINCH

Paul Finch is well known for his crime novels, in particular his very popular DS Mark ‘Heck’ Heckenburg and DC Lucy Clayburn novels, the first of the latter series, Strangers, making the Sunday Times Top 10 list. He is a two-times winner of the British Fantasy Award (2002 and 2007) and a one-time winner of the International Horror Guild Award (2007), and currently edits the brilliant British folk-horror Terror Tales anthologies for Telos Publishing.

Author Paul Finch has blogged about ILL MET BY DARKNESS at http://paulfinch-writer.blogspot.com/2020/11/ill-met-by-darkness-coming-your-way.html

ILL MET BY DARKNESS comprises four original chilling tales (all novelettes/novellas) written especially for this volume.

“Snicker-Snack” is a darkly disturbing study of art, monsters and guilt... beware the jabberwock, ‘the claws that catch’.

“Down to a Sunless Sea” features a weird Cretan objet d’art, an archaeological find, a legendary queen and a fiend of the Ancient World.

“The Hell Wain” takes us to a sleepy Lancashire village on Guy Fawkes Night, and introduces the horrific tradition of ‘The Bonfire Boys’.

“Spirit of the Season” explores the idea of old Christmas, strange ritual, ancient powers and age-old winter terrors.

Stoke up the fire, pour yourself a brandy or whiskey, turn on the lamp (to chase away the shadows), settle down in the flickering light, open up this darkly delightful tome and invite the fictional terrors in... but do make sure that all the doors and windows are safely and very securely... locked!

Artist Paul Lowe provides the rather wonderful wrap jacket painting.

ILL MET BY DARKNESS is a Deluxe Hand Numbered Limited Edition Jacketed Hardcover. Lithographically Printed, Bound in Wibalin Cloth (Fine Linen Style), Foil Blocked to Spine, Quality 80gsm Munken Cream Bookwove, Coloured Endpapers, Section Sewn binding, Ribbon Marker & Head/Tailbands. Approx 128pp including prelims etc.

Publication currently scheduled for early December 2020.

POWERS AND PRESENCES HAS ARRIVED

Powers and Presences has touched down here in France and I am busy checking, numbering, packing and (over the next week) posting all pre-ordered copies.

Very few (already) of this one left!

Here’s a photo of the actual book itself (with its quite brilliant jacket painting).

I’d ask folk to continue to be patient as international post is still not operating quite as it was before the coronavirus crisis.

I am working hard on the next Sarob Press volume which I hope to have out in time for Christmas ... I am aiming to announce this one later this month.

Keep safe and well everyone. Cheers, Robert.

NEW TITLE NEWS: POWERS AND PRESENCES

POWERS AND PRESENCES

John Howard

Mark Valentine

Charles Walter Stansby Williams (1886-1945) wrote seven mystical/supernatural novels between 1930 (War in Heaven) and 1945 (All Hallows’ Eve). He was also a poet and theological writer, and a member of The Inklings, the Oxford-based group of literary titans that included, amongst others, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

In this all new shared volume, John Howard and Mark Valentine pay affectionate tribute to Williams’ writings with a long novella, “The Dance of Gold” by John and two novelettes, “Kraken Tide” and “Seek for the Pomegranate” by Mark. Both authors have also provided illuminating afterwords to their stories.

In “The Dance of Gold” the rector of a rural parish discovers the secret of a legendary coin and the enormous responsibilities of becoming, even temporarily, its guardian.

In “Kraken Tide” a vast storm flooding the Lincolnshire coast coincides with the activities of a mysterious black magician and, possibly, the secrets of the Templars.

In “Seek for the Pomegranate” an unusual and weird Roman talisman leads two young scholars into a mystical adventure and the Orphic Mysteries.

Artist Paul Lowe provides the rather wonderful wrap jacket painting and a black & white title page illustration.

POWERS AND PRESENCES is a Deluxe Hand Numbered Limited Edition Jacketed Hardcover. Lithographically Printed, Bound in Wibalin Cloth (Fine Linen Style), Foil Blocked to Spine, Quality 80gsm Munken Cream Bookwove, Coloured Endpapers, Section Sewn binding, Gold Ribbon Marker & Head/Tailbands. Approx 128pp including prelims etc.

Publication currently scheduled for September 2020.

THE GHOSTS & SCHOLARS BOOK OF MAZES ~ UPDATE

France began to ease the Covid-19 (coronavirus) confinement earlier this week.
The local Post Office has re-opened but I am restricted to how many packages I can post daily. I hope to get all UK and European pre-paid orders for The Ghosts & Scholars Book of Mazes sent out by the end of this week.
Our wonderful post-mistress has asked me to hold off sending USA and Rest of World orders until next week and, if all goes to plan, by the end of next week all pre-paid orders will have shipped.
Please, however, continue to be extra patient as international post is still working on a reduced basis due to the crisis and is operating much slower than usual.
Thanks for the continued support and do keep safe and well everyone.
Cheers, Robert.

BOOK OF MAZES AND CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

Although things seem to be slowly improving here in France, President Macron has announced that the Covid-19 (coronavirus) lockdown is to be, unsurprisingly, extended until the 11th May.
The confinement will then, hopefully, be relaxed somewhat ~ we expect to be instructed to wear face masks in public and our commune will be supplying two washable masks per person to every home shortly.
La Poste are already re-opening a number of post offices on a sort of phased basis ~ although I am still waiting to hear on the local post offices here in our area.
Be assured ... as soon as I possibly can I will post all ordered copies of The Ghosts & Scholars Book of Mazes. And, to whet your appetite (so to speak), here’s a photo of the actual “object” itself.
Once again, I’d like to thank everyone for their amazing patience and understanding at this quite unprecedented and terribly uncertain time in all our lives ...
Please, everyone, do take care, keep safe and stay healthy.
I’ll update again as soon as I know more.
Cheers, Robert.

UPDATE RE THE GHOSTS & SCHOLARS BOOK OF MAZES

THE GHOSTS & SCHOLARS BOOK OF MAZES has arrived and it looks great.
I have now finished packing all pre-orders.
However, because of Covid-19 (coronavirus) and the extended restrictions imposed by the French President, I can’t actually get to post the books just yet – all shops, bars, restaurants, and indeed, the local post offices etc are closed and, in line with much of the World at this time, we can only leave our home to buy essential food and/or medicines.
As soon as I can (and, hopefully, in a couple of weeks or so), I’ll get your books to the post office and, then, post-willing, to you all.
I would ask folk to bear with me at this extremely difficult time and, far more importantly, please, everyone, keep safe and keep healthy.
My very best wishes go out to all our customers and their families and friends ...
I’ll update regarding shipping of ordered books as soon as I can.
Thanks for your continued support as always.
Cheers, Robert.

NEW TITLE NEWS: THE GHOSTS & SCHOLARS BOOK OF MAZES

NEW TITLE NEWS

THE GHOSTS & SCHOLARS BOOK OF MAZES

M.R. James’s 1911 tale, “Mr Humphreys and His Inheritance”, is one of the most famous maze short stories, if not the most famous.
Editor Rosemary Pardoe has chosen eight supernatural maze stories to reprint, all of them taken from small press journals and books, and some of them never previously reprinted.
The mazes range from unicursal turf through puzzle hedge to modern crop examples; one tale is a prequel to “Mr Humphreys and His Inheritance”.
The second part of this volume consists of six brand new stories which range even more widely, from a Roman mosaic maze to a mirror maze at the top of a high-rise office block.
All of the stories have a folklore, folk custom and/or antiquarian background.
So, fourteen supernatural maze stories by some fabulous authors of folk horror and ghostly, ghastly, spooky tales of terror.
